Chapter 5: Design Your Car

<<Return to "Chapter 4: Lessons from The Road"

“When you’re committed, you do whatever it takes”

– Fabienne Fredrickson

Part 1 of Life is a Road was all about understanding what kind of a driver you are and can be and how to live your life that way. Part 2 is an extension of that. Once you’re ready to drive, you’re ready for a car. And here’s the best part – you can design the car that is Your Life. And you must, because if you don’t, someone else will design it for you, and that usually means you will be a living the life you don’t want to.

Want to live your life your way?

Let’s get started then.

Get Ready to Design Your Car

Or…

“Creating a vision and plan for your life.”

Some might say life unfolds and you just figure it out as you go. This is partially true, but we can’t leave everything to chance. Nor can we expect someone else to plan our life for us. You can do that in three ways;

1.     Get clear - Seeing your reality as it is, brings you clarity of where you are right now. But clarity is also knowing where you’re headed in life.

2.     Get focused - Once you get clear on where you’re headed in life, you can start moving towards that Destination; that’s clarity. Focus is about using that clarity to know which Direction to take.

3.     Get motivated - You know what motivation feels like. And you know what motivation looks like. But how do you know if you have the motivation you need to take action? Where does it come from?

As you begin to realise that you are more than capable of changing your life anytime you want to (and a large part of this book will guide you on how), there is one thing this book cannot do for you. And that is to make you Willing. Will power come from honesty and openness, with yourself first, then with others. Let’s explore this now.

1.     Be honest with yourself - Please know that being honest with yourself doesn’t mean you have to be hard on yourself. This is the common mistake many of us make when trying to be truthful with ourselves, because being honest with ourselves can be hard, and the truth can be very harsh.

2.     Be open with yourself - Being open with yourself comes down to how well you communicate with yourself. The most useful way to do that is to simply write down your thoughts. The power in doing this allows you to release your thoughts, process them as you write, then return to them later to read back over what you wrote, and try to make sense of it all. From there, you can decide what you will be open about.

3.     Be honest and open with others - If your own thoughts are clear to you, you can communicate effectively with others. There’s no point trying to explain something to someone if you can’t even explain it to yourself. By getting into the habit of practicing honesty above all else, then opening up your communication to express that honesty in a positive way, you have the foundation to build real, strong, and long-lasting relationships with other people.

Be Willing to “Work” on Your Car

Or…

“Doing whatever it takes for however long it takes.”

Are you with me so far? Have you accepted you are always more than capable to create change in your life? And have you accepted that being willing to change comes down to you making yourself willing? If you answered YES to those questions, then keep reading. Here comes the really good stuff.

1.     Motivation – the Ignition for your Engine - Are you one of those people in life who struggles to get motivated? Of course you are! So am I. In fact, so is everyone on the planet. Eventually, you will become more driven and consistent in your actions, but occasionally, you’ll need that little burst of motivation when your energy is low, or you’ve just had a rough day.

2.     Creative Thinking - If you believe that in order to be truly creative you have to be good at writing, drawing, painting, music, sculpting or any other artistic activity, throw that belief out the window right now! All of those activities are simply just outlets. Creativity is really the expression of Creative Thinking. There is a four step process you’ll learn about in the book, that will help you take any creative idea and make it a reality. it’s very powerful, and lots of fun.

3.     Be Motivated to Solve Problems Creatively - Previously you may have encountered problems in your life which you tried to fight off or just ignored. But if the problem got the better of you, that’s because you just didn’t know how to solve it.  That’s okay – this happens to all of us. Some of the most capable and successful people I’ve had the privilege to work with, all had one thing in common; they were Master Problem Solvers. They didn’t resort to old-fashioned ways of doing that. They got creative. They did it, I learned how to do it and you can do it too.

Getting Help to Design Your Car

Or…

“Seeking advice and support to make your life work for you.”

We all need help from time to time. None of us can do everything on our own, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Receiving help is actually easier than you might think as usually, it’s the act of asking for help that’s not so easy.

Asking for help first requires us to admit we need the help. Depending on what you need help for, this could be overwhelming in itself. But as we all have the permission to make mistakes in life, we also have the permission to ask for help. Get past any feelings that are holding you back, i.e., pride, guilt, embarrassment, etc. Then, you free yourself up to receiving the help, openly.

In “Life is a Road”, we’ll look in depth at who can help you, the types of help you can get, and how to turn that help into advice, and that advice into action. Knowing this is one thing; understanding it is the next part. And once you understand how to use the help you get, you will tackle every problem you encounter head on.
